Yamethin Substation Upgrade – Reliable Capacity for a Growing District
Yaung Ni Oo Electric completed the Yamethin substation upgrade at Ywar Tan, replacing legacy transformer capacity (2.5 + 1.5) MVA with a new 10 MVA transformer at 33/11 kV. The objective was to expand firm capacity, improve voltage stability, and strengthen distribution reliability for Yamethin’s households, commerce, and public services.
Planning, Schedule, and Risk Management
The project was delivered within 180 working days and 1,440 total hours through detailed planning and tight field coordination. Prior to mobilization, the company structured a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and skilled workers; secured high-quality equipment; and scheduled works around the rainy season to minimize weather-related delays.
Key risk controls included: staged material deliveries, weather-aware sequencing, reinforced HSE procedures, and daily progress checkpoints.
Turnkey Scope & Technical Works
Under a full turnkey model, Yaung Ni Oo Electric executed civil, electrical, and commissioning activities, including:
- Transformer upgrade to 10 MVA with 33/11 kV interfaces
- Switchbay foundations and equipment installation
- Control building (protection relays, SCADA/controls, AC/DC systems)
- Compound & switchyard fencing, earthing grid, lighting, drainage, access
- Primary/secondary cabling, protection coordination, FAT/SAT, and as-built docs
Quality assurance and safety controls were embedded at each milestone to align with national and international quality standards.
Delivery Through Seasonal Challenges
Because construction overlapped with the rainy season, site access and logistics required additional management. The team maintained schedule integrity by resequencing civil works during heavy-rain windows, expediting long-lead components, and coordinating closely with vendors and transport partners. This kept the Yamethin substation upgrade on track without compromising safety or quality.
Handover and Operational Readiness
Upon completion, the upgraded facility—transformer, switchbay, and auxiliaries—was tested, commissioned, and formally handed over to MESC (Mandalay Electricity Supply Corporation). Documentation included test reports, relay settings, O&M manuals, and as-built drawings to support long-term operations.
Community & Regional Impact
The enhanced 33/11 kV 10 MVA transformer capacity at Ywar Tan provides:
Reliable, higher-capacity supply for homes and businesses
Improved voltage profiles and reduced technical losses
A stronger platform for industrial and service-sector growth across Yamethin
