Kyaikto 33 kV Line Project (AW/OC): Dedicated Feeder Delivered to Kyaiktiyo Pagoda & Cable Car Substations

December 16, 2025

Fast Facts

Kyaikto 33 kV Line Project — Strengthening a Strategic Township

The Kyaikto 33 kV line project was executed to provide a robust, dedicated feeder that improves voltage stability and reduces interruptions across Kyaikto Township in Mon State. The line interconnects the Kyaikto (Saung Naing Gyi) Substation to Win Kalaw Junction, directly supporting the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda Substation and the Cable Car Substation—facilities that serve residents, pilgrims, and the regional tourism economy. Delivering a dedicated feeder isolates critical loads from upstream disturbances, improving reliability while enabling future load growth.

Planning, Schedule, and Risk Controls

The project achieved completion in 180 calendar days and 1,440 total work hours. Prior to mobilization, a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and skilled workers was formed, and long-lead materials were secured to keep progress on track through the rainy season.

Key delivery disciplines included:

These controls ensured the Kyaikto 33 kV line project hit time, cost, and quality targets without compromising HSE (health, safety, environment) standards.

Turnkey Scope & Technical Works

Executed as a full turnkey EPC, the scope covered end-to-end activities:

  1. Survey & Design
Alignment optimization, sag/tension calculations for AW/OC conductors, structure spotting, and clearance checks to national standards.

  2. Civil Works
Foundation design for varied soils, earthing at structures as specified, access track improvements, and drainage where monsoon runoff could impact stability.

  3. Line Erection
Pole setting and plumb verification, crossarm and insulator installation, stringing of AW/OC conductors, spacer/armor/hardware fitting, and sectioning plans to manage energization safely.

  4. Substation Interfaces
Terminations at Kyaikto (Saung Naing Gyi) and at Win Kalaw Junction, including protection coordination, interlocking reviews, and relay setting verification.

  5. Testing & Commissioning
Mechanical completion, punch-list clearance, insulation resistance checks, line patrolling, sectional energization, and as-built documentation.

All materials and workmanship complied with national and international quality standards, assuring long-term performance and maintainability for the electricity distribution in Myanmar grid.

Why a Dedicated Feeder Matters for Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

The dedicated feeder Kyaiktiyo Pagoda arrangement separates the Pagoda and Cable Car loads from upstream industrial or mixed feeders. Benefits include:

These improvements ripple outward—better reliability for local businesses, accommodation, and transport, and a more stable platform for future electrification initiatives.

Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Performance

Construction adjacent to public roads and pilgrimage routes required stringent HSE measures: traffic coordination during stringing, barricading around foundation works, fall-protection for work-at-height, and live-network proximity procedures. Daily HSE briefings and documented permits-to-work underpinned safe execution throughout the Kyaikto 33 kV line project.

Outcomes and Handover

With testing and commissioning complete, the line entered service on schedule. The utility received a full handover package—test reports, material certificates, relay settings, and as-built drawings—supporting smooth operations and lifecycle maintenance.
